CURRENT SITUATION: What’s in your personal care products?

Lavender, herbs

One would think the items for sale in our drugstores and supermarkets have been thoroughly tested and found safe from dangerous chemicals. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many personal care products sold in the US can and do contain toxic ingredients. Do you know what’s in your personal care products?

I started investigating product ingredients one morning as my granddaughter was getting ready for school. Her skin and lips tend to get chapped easily, and I gave her a product to apply to her lips. I took a closer look at the label and it said it temporarily protects and helps relieve chapped or cracked skin and lips, but the warning said external use only. Say what? Isn’t it going to end up internal if it goes on lips and cracked skin? It occurred to me that her exposure to chemicals in 2017 is so much greater than mine was at her age. The more I read about ingredients in personal care products the more concerned I became. What goes on skin, gets into the bloodstream, therefore isn’t it just as important to be mindful about skincare as the food we’re eating?

Unfortunately the FDA has no authority to require companies to test cosmetics for safety, and terms such as natural and hypoallergenic mean nothing. The Federal Food Drug and Cosmetics Act (FFDCA) has not been amended significantly since it was enacted more than 75 years ago. FDA regulations do not prohibit the use of carcinogens, mutagens and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. 90% of the ingredients used in personal care products have never been tested for safety. The health and beauty industry in the US is basically self-regulated. You may feel the amounts of toxic chemicals is too small to have any negative effects on your health. But at the end of the day, no one is testing for the combinations of toxins we are exposed to throughout the day, from personal care, household cleaning products and even food.

That is what lead up to me finding Neal’s Yard Remedies. I’ve done other direct sales companies in the past, and I wasn’t looking to try another, but ordering out a consultant kit seemed like a no-brainer if I wanted to try a variety of products. When the kit came, I fell in love with the beautiful blue bottles, the products inside, and the most ethical company I’ve ever come across.

KEEP YOUR WINTER SKIN HEALTHY!

WINTER SKIN

Do you change up your skin care routine for the season? If you live in a colder climate like Minnesota, you probably notice your skin needs extra care and more hydration as the winter months go by. Winter skin care doesn’t have to be difficult.

Changing your cleanser can be a great start. If you normally use a facial wash, a creamy cleanser may be less drying. My favorite year round is Rejuvenating Frankincense Refining Cleanser. It’s never drying to my skin.

Exfoliation becomes even more important in the winter to remove dead skin. Cell turnover slows down as we age, so exfoliating twice a week can really brighten a dull complexion.

The toner you choose can also help. Avoid drying toners with alcohol, and look for anti-oxidant rich formulas that will prepare your skin for serum. The right toner will help your skin better absorb serum or facial oil, while removing the last traces of cleanser. It’s also great in the morning if you are too rushed to for the cleansing step.

It’s important to remember to use less product when you are using a serum, as well as facial oil and moisturizer. Serum is formulated to penetrate deeper into your skin, and facial oil will nourish, moisturize and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Frankincense Intense Concentrate offers amazing anti-aging benefits. Find it here. Finishing with a good moisturizer on top of the serum and facial oil provides a layer of protection.

A thin layer of  Wild Rose Beauty Balm is perfect protection from the elements if you will be outdoors, or if your skin needs some extra pampering.

The most important thing is to find a routine that works with your life style. Some days you may not have time for every step. Those days you may just cleanse, tone, moisturize. Busy mornings you may just tone and moisturize. That’s when using the best products for your skin pays off! Check out Neal’s Yard Remedies products for the face here.
