All About Neal’s Yard Remedies Labels

Neal's Yard Remedies | NYR Organic | Non-toxic beauty | Non-toxic lifestyle | organic beauty \ green beauty | Organic skincare |

What information do Neal’s Yard Remedies product ingredient labels contain? How do they differ from US product labeling? The European Union sets a higher level of transparency for finished cosmetic products, preventing the marketing of hazardous ingredients, and strengthening safety for consumers.

What does it mean to be organic?

In the US the term “organic” is not defined in the regulations that FDA enforces under their authority for cosmetic products. Neal’s Yard Remedies products are manufactured in England, and the ingredients in them are certified organic by the Soil Association, a well respected non-profit third party certification organization. It is considered one of the most stringent of organic certification bodies anywhere in the world. Food, health, beauty and textile products that hold the Soil Association organic symbol have been produced to the highest possible animal welfare and environmental standards.

Products containing more than 95% certified organic ingredients can carry the Soil Association logo and use “organic” in the product name. Items with 70-95% certified organic ingredients can carry the Soil Association label, but do not have “organic” in the product name. Products with less than 70% organic ingredients will have the organic ingredients indicated with an asterisk (*). Clay based products are an exception, as only agricultural products can be considered organic.

What about those symbols?

Neal’s Yard Remedies products will have either the hour glass symbol which stands for Date of Minimum Durability, or BBE which stands for Best Before End Date. It’s important to note these are not expiration dates. A products who’s BBE date has come and gone may still be good. The best way to check if a product is usable is by aroma, appearance and texture. So many factors go into a product staying fresh, like the temperature it was stored at, and whether a spatula was used for products in jars. The other symbol on the packaging is the open jar, or PAO. This gives you the Period After Opening, or number of months that the product will be at its best. Typically this will be 3, 6 or 12 months. Each product will contain a Batch number. Quality Control keeps a reference sample at the factory from each batch.

How long do Essential Oils last?

Essential oils don’t expire, therefore you won’t find an expiration date on them. It is recommended you use them within 12 months, however many will be good well beyond that. The citrus oils tend to lose their usefulness quicker. A great way to use older oils is for cleaning.

In the European Union full ingredients, listed in decreasing order, are compulsory on the labels. The INCI, the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients is a standardized system of naming ingredients, requiring plant ingredients to be listed by the botanical names. When a product contains essential oils, the constituents of the essential oils must be listed. This is a EU requirement, they were not added separately. These essential oil constituents are listed on the labels in italics.

Labeling laws are more lax in the US. Ingredients can be hidden under “fragrance,” “parfum,” and by simply listing “key ingredients.” Trade secret laws permit many ingredients to be hidden from ingredient labels.

You will also find a list of ingredients never used in Neal’s Yard Remedies products on the label, such as parabens, synthetic fragrance, and mineral oil. Read more about what goes into Neal’s Yard Remedies products in the Ingredients Statement.

Save the Bees With Bee Lovely

save the bees | Bee Lovely | All Over Balm | NYR Organic | Neal's Yard Remedies

Neal’s Yard Remedies has been campaigning for bees since 2011, and is committed to supporting over 50 million bees by 2020 by donating 3% of sales from the Bee Lovely Range to bee friendly charities.

Some of my favorite Neal’s Yard Remedies products are the Bee Lovely Collection. Not only are these products wonderful, and beautifully fragranced, but purchasing them benefits bees. Neal’s Yard Remedies has been supporting projects to save the bees since 2011, when they first introduced Bee Lovely Hand Cream as a “limited edition” product, launching the “Save the Bees” campaign. That year $16,500 was raised and The Ecologist named it Best Campaign.

Neal’s Yard Remedies continues their commitment to support bee friendly charities, most recently supporting Bees for Development, where bee colonies were introduced to cashew orchards in Ghana. Last year $11,000 gave 5 hives each to 50 cashew farmers, increasing yields and generating extra income from honey and beeswax. The goal is to continue support and fund 5 more hives for each farmer.

Save the Bees | Neal's Yard Remedies | NYR Organic | Bee Lovely | Bee Lovely All Over Balm

Neal’s Yard Remedies Bee Lovely All Over Balm is a versatile, certified organic, deeply nourishing body balm, perfect for the entire family, ages 3 years and over. It absorbs easily into skin, soothing and comforting dry elbows, hands, heels, knees, cuticles, and all over. Organic beeswax from Camaroon protects delicate skin. Cocoa butter leaves skin silky, and coconut oil smooths and retains moisture. Castor seed oil contains a rare, dense compound called ricinoleic acid known to soothe skin. Organic Fair-trade honey from Mexico is sustainably harvested. The orange essential oil fragrance is fresh and uplifting. Each purchase of Bee Lovely All Over Balm supports over 500 bees.

What Else Can We Do?

Honey bees pollinate one third of food crops. Intensive farm practices and pesticide use is contributing to the decline. The number one thing we can do to help save the bees, is stop using pesticides and buy organic fruits and veggies. Plant bee-friendly herbs and wild flowers, and let some of your garden go wild. Learn more about Neal’s Yard Remedies Bee Lovely Campaign. You can feel good knowing every time you purchase a Bee Lovely product from Neal’s Yard Remedies you are helping honey bees.

Neal’s Yard Remedies and MADE SAFE®

NYR Organic, Neal's Yard Remedied, Made Safe® certification,

Health is the most important thing to Neal’s Yard Remedies. When formulating and making products, they follow the precautionary principle – which means not using anything they believe could cause you, or the planet harm. Wouldn’t it be great if there was an easy way for consumers to know whether the products they purchase contain chemicals known to harm human health and the environment? MADE SAFE®, an independent third-party verification that screens products for known toxic chemicals harmful to human health, will do just that.

Neal's Yard Remedies, NYR Organic, Made Safe®, Frankincense Intense, Wild Rose Beauty Balm

Neal’s Yard Remedies is the first (and only, as of July 2017) direct sales skincare and aromatherapy company to achieve Made Safe® certification for a variety of products. MADE SAFE® is America’s first certification to screen out known toxic chemicals in consumer products including personal care, cleaning and more. The Frankincense Intense™ Collection and Wild Rose Beauty Balm are certified made without known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, reproductive toxins, or other chemicals found to harm human health, and now carry the Made Safe® seal. Neal’s Yard Remedies currently has eleven products Certified as Made Safe®

What You Won’t Find in Neal’s Yard Remedies Products

NO PARABENS – linked to estrogen overproduction

NO SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES – many contain synthetic chemicals that are harmful to health

NO GMO INGREDIENTS – not enough is known about the long-term implications

NO animal testing – unnecessary and cruel

NO SILICONES – coat the skin, impeding its natural function

NO PHTHALATES – reported to have toxic impact on human and animal life

NO NANO – not enough is known about the long-term implications

NO MINERAL OILS – derived from petroleum, have a tendency to block the skin

NO EDTA – doesn’t readily biodegrade

NO PROPYLENE GLYCOL – derived from petroleum

NO CARBOMER – derived from petroleum

NO DEA – associated with known carcinogens

NO ACRYLATES – derived from petroleum
NO BHT – linked to breathing and lung impairment

This “no” list makes these products more difficult to formulate, and also makes Neal’s Yard Remedies products special.

Neal’s Yard Remedies has been pioneering safer products for years, and is committed to transparency and ethics. MADE SAFE® certification reinforces that commitment, and is a huge honor. This certification is rigorous, scientific, and most products on the market today wouldn’t pass the criteria necessary. Learn more about MADE SAFE® and check out the MADE SAFE® certified Neal’s Yard Remedies products.

What’s the Big Deal About Plastic and Microbeads?

#NYROrganicUSEarthDay2018 #EarthDay2018 #EndPlasticPollution #lessplastic #plasticless Ocean, pollution, microbeads

You may have heard about plastic and microbeads in our oceans and about the Microbead-Free Waters Act going into effect in July of 2017. How did microbeads become such a big deal? April 22 is Earth Day, and I can’t think of a better time to blog about the devastation plastics and microbeads are causing.

World Oceans Day, pollution, ocean

The Cycle of Microbeads

Microbeads are tiny particles of plastic originally added to hand wash, toothpaste, face wash and scrubs, and other personal care products as exfoliators. They get washed down the drain to waste water treatment plants that weren’t designed to filter such small particles. A huge percentage end up in sludge and used as fertilizer. After being spread on crops, the microbeads get washed into streams, rivers, lakes and oceans where fish and other aquatic life ingest them. They are impossible to remove and do not break down. The implications for human health as a result of eating fish and seafood contaminated with microbeads is unknown.

#NYROrganicUSEarthDay2018 #EarthDay2018 #EndPlasticPollution #lessplastic #plasticless #microbeads

Microbeads are not the only concern for our oceans. Fragmentation of larger pieces of plastic are damaging the oceans as well. Plastic shopping bags, generally used for a matter of minutes, can last in the environment for 100 years. Nearly 2 million single-use plastic bags are distributed world-wide every minute. Choosing to use reusable water bottles and skipping the straw and carrying a reusable shopping bag are small ways to reduce our plastic usage.

The Microbead-Free Waters Act will not instantly remove all microbeads out of existence. Manufacturers are phasing them out, but there are many loopholes. You may have products at home that contain them. Check any products before you purchase, to make sure you are not contributing to the problem. If you find you already have products containing microbeads, you can return them to the manufacturer, telling them why you are choosing not to use the product. Or dispose of it in your trash where it will end up in a landfill and burned. Not an ideal solution, but far better than having it end up in the ocean.

Natural Alternatives

Neal’s Yard Remedies has never used microbeads in their scrubs and exfoliators. Instead, they only use highly effective natural exfoliators like peach seed, organic ground rice, rosehip seed powder, lotus seed, argan kernel and ground pumice powder. Honey & Orange Facial Scrub contains ground rice. Rehydrating Rose Facial Polish gently exfoliates with wild rose seed powder to smooth and revitalize your face. Seaweed Salt Scrub uses sea salt for deep cleansing and toning. Pumice Foot Scrub contains peach seed and pumice powder as natural exfoliators. Visit my website for these and other great microbead-free products.

Are Your Beauty Products Cruelty-free?

cruelty-free, animal testing, leaping bunny, Neal's Yard Remedies

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

How important is it to you that the products you buy are cruelty-free and have not been tested on animals? ALL of Neal’s Yard Remedies skincare & cosmetics are approved under Cruelty-Free International’s Humane Cosmetics Standards. Neal’s Yard Remedies doesn’t test any of their products on animals and never has. Everything they make is 100% vegetarian. They prefer to rely on their botanical and technical expertise to ensure their products are effective and safe. Instead of testing on animals, which have no say in the matter and can’t speak for themselves, they give their new products to human volunteers (through an independent company) who are more than happy to test them and give feedback.

Neal's Yard Remedies, cruel-free, leaping bunny, animal testing,

Millions of animals are experimented on in the United States, however since 2013, the European Union banned the sale of cosmetics and ingredients tested on animals. Testing of cosmetic ingredients has been banned in the European Union since 2009.

Alternatives to Animal Testing

Today there are alternatives to animal testing providing greater accuracy in predicting outcomes. Cell cultures, human tissues, computer models, and human volunteers are all being successfully used instead of animals.

How You Can Help

Animal Defenders International provides a list of US cruelty-free cosmetics companies HERE. We can all vote with our wallets, by looking for the Leaping Bunny whenever we go shopping. All Leaping Bunny certified companies must meet strict criteria including regular independent audits for their entire product range, and for every country they sell in. Tell the House of Representatives to pass the Humane Cosmetics Act to end animal testing for cosmetics in the United States. Join Neal’s Yard Remedies in supporting the Humane Cosmetic Act and sign the petition HERE.

Let’s continue the discussion over on FACEBOOK!

What Does World Fair Trade Day Mean?

World Fair Trade Day, Neal's Yard Remedies, FairTrade, Fair for Life, FairWild

What is World Fair Trade Day all about? World Fair Trade Day is the second Saturday in May each year, and is celebrated to promote and educate about fair trade. Not that long ago being a smart shopper simply meant getting the best price. Today we know getting the best price could mean the goods we are purchasing were manufactured in sweatshops, were produced by child or forced labor, under poor working conditions and negatively impacting the environment. How do we sort it all out?

Neal’s Yard Remedies supports three organizations dedicated to fair trade.

World fair trade day, Neal's Yard Remedies, FairTrade, Fair for Life, FairWild

Fairtrade

Fairtrade ensures that the farmers and producers involved get a fair deal for their work, and a premium for community projects. Neal’s Yard Remedies Fairtrade ingredients include organic honey, rooibos, apricot oil and Brazil nut oil. In 2009 Neal’s Yard Remedies helped launch skincare enriched with Fairtrade certified ingredients. According to the Fairtrade website, Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Fair for Life

Fair for Life stands for fair trade and sustainable supply chains. Organic argan oil, geranium and tea tree essential oils are among the ingredients Neal’s Yard Remedies uses carrying the Fair for Life certification.  According to the Fair for Life website, Fair for Life Certification assures that human rights are safeguarded at any stage of production, workers enjoy good and fair working conditions and smallholder farmers receive a fair share. Fair trade improves the livelihood of thousands of smallholder farmers and workers by providing the means for social community projects and empowerment of people.

FairWild

FairWild promotes best practices in harvesting and gathering wild plants used in cosmetics, fabric and  medicinal products, and a fair deal for all those involved in the supply chain. One in five wild plants are at risk of extinction from over harvesting and loss of habitat. In 2013, Neal’s Yard Remedies launched the world’s first certified organic and independently assured sustainable and fairly traded wild-harvested frankincense.

This is just 3 of the many wonderful organizations Neal’s Yard Remedies supports, and another reason I love representing this company. You can feel good about your purchases from Neal’s Yard Remedies. They are independently verified by the industry’s leading certifying bodies and organizations, guaranteeing the highest possible standards.
